Thirsty Hair...

So I keep finding different projects to do cause I like them..ha.

Today I just decided to do a Hair Porosity Test.  What is that? Ok it is a simple test you take with hair to see how well it is absorbing moisture.

You will need: a couple of strands of  hair, a clear glass or bowl, room temperature tap water.

Let's get started:

  • Fill your container of choice with water. Midway is fine.

  • Drop in the hair.

  • Do not touch the container or hair anymore. Let it sit for 5 minutes.

  • Observe what your hair is doing in the water.  If it floats then you have low porosity and if it sinks then you have high porosity.

Here's what it all means from: http://www.naturallycurly.com/curlreading/curly-hair-care-methods/quick-easy-hair-porosity-density-tests

If your hair strands stayed afloat, this means that you have low porosity. Your hair is typically resistant to moisture. This does not mean that your hair is unhealthy; it simply means that you need to help your hair retain moisture. Try using lighter hair products with humectants, and utilize heat! Heat can be your best friend if you have low porosity. Wash and condition your hair with warm water, and deep condition under a hooded dryer (or hold a hair dryer over your head).
If you hair strands sunk in the bowl of water, your hair is highly porous. It easily absorbs moisture and therefore is mostly likely prone to frizz. Highly porous hair requires a little more effort to maintain, but it’s nothing a well planned hair regimen can’t handle! Try adding some protein rich products to your hair regimen, such as an avocado deep conditioner. Porous hair needs protein to fill in the gaps, so look for hair products with proteins such as aloe and wheat protein.

So my hair is still sitting at the top of the water but part of it has moved down. Final observation is that I need to do some work on pushing moisture in my hair.  Gotta love this hair I have and all the new things I am learning about it.

Let me know if you try the test and what happened for you.

Until next time...

Food Journaling

Doctors, herbalists and more have suggested taking the time to journal food habits.  I have not done it.  I have thought about it though.

I came across:

It seems very straight forward but I do see that I will have to create my own version to save paper.

Just thought I would share.

Peace out!

Body Balance

After being sick for majority of the new year I have been researching ways to stay healthy and to balance my body out.  I notice that my energy level and such still seems to be off.

So in doing some research I came across.

  • Take a pH level test using either saliva or urine.  The test can be purchased at your local health market or online.
  • Chlorophyll can help balance your pH.  It is suggested to take 1 tsp of a liquid chlorophyll powered supplement in water up to eight times a day.  Other alkalizing foods are figs, bananas, watermelon and dandelion greens.
  • Add more acidic foods to balance a highly alkaline pH with eggs, wine, aged cheeses, fish and prunes.
  • Check out a pH Balance Chart http://www.naturalhealthschool.com/pH-balance.html
  • Detox.  Here is a quick detox diet suggested for women: http://www.womentowomen.com/detoxification/detoxdiet.aspx
  • More information on Acid and Alkaline foods http://www.happyherbalist.com/alkaline_acid_balance.htm
  • I hope this comes in handy for someone.  It is not just a sluggest feeling that makes me think my pH is off but I think now is a good time to check my body and get things in order since winter is a slower time of year.

Let me know if you have ever taken a look at your pH or want more information.  I am always up for sharing.

Have a wonderful day and stay healthy.
